The Star Wars galaxy spans over 25,000 years of in-universe history, and the era you drop your OC into changes everything — available technology, political factions, the state of the Force, even what a lightsaber means. A Jedi during the Old Republic is a fundamentally different character than a Jedi hiding during the Empire.
This guide is organized chronologically. Find your era, then build outward.
The golden age for OC creation. Canon is sparse, creative freedom is vast, and the galaxy is at its most chaotic.
What defines this era:
OC opportunities unique to this era:
The Old Republic is the best era for Force-sensitive OCs who don't fit neatly into Jedi or Sith. The moral ambiguity is baked into the setting.

Thirteen years of galactic war. The Jedi are generals, the Republic is fracturing, and Palpatine is pulling every string.
What defines this era:
OC archetypes that thrive here:
| Archetype | Role | Design Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jedi General | Commands a clone battalion | Republic armor elements mixed with Jedi robes; utility belt, comlink |
| Clone Commander | Leads troops with personalized gear | Phase I or Phase II armor, custom paint, rank markings |
| Separatist Agent | Works for Dooku or independent systems | Corporate fashion, battle droid escorts, subtle villainy |
| Underworld Operator | Profits from war chaos | Smuggler aesthetic, neutral territory, connections to both sides |
| Padawan | Young Jedi navigating wartime | Simpler robes, training saber or early lightsaber, braid |
The Empire has crushed the Republic. Jedi are hunted. The galaxy operates under authoritarian rule.
What defines this era:
Design rules by faction:
Imperial: Clean lines, pressed uniforms, rank plaques, code cylinders. Officers wear boots and gloves at all times. ISB (intelligence) agents dress in black. TIE pilots have distinctive sealed helmets.
Rebel: Mismatched gear, repurposed equipment, orange flight suits for pilots, Earth-tone fatigues for ground troops. Nothing matches because nothing is standardized.
Independent: Bounty hunters, smugglers, and crime syndicate operators. This is Boba Fett territory — battered armor, hidden weapons, ships that look like junk but fly fast.
A fractured galaxy rebuilding from war while a new threat grows in the Unknown Regions.
What defines this era:
Lightsaber color isn't aesthetic — it's narrative.
| Color | Meaning | Who Carries It |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | Guardian — combat-focused Jedi | Most Jedi Knights, frontline fighters |
| Green | Consular — wisdom and Force mastery | Scholars, diplomats, negotiators |
| Yellow | Sentinel — balance of combat and knowledge | Jedi Temple Guards, investigators |
| Purple | Rare — inner conflict between light and dark | Characters who walk a moral edge |
| Red | Sith — "bled" from a corrupted kyber crystal | All Sith and dark side users |
| White | Purified — a bled crystal healed by a light-side user | Ahsoka Tano; characters who rejected both Jedi and Sith |
| Orange | Extremely rare — canon ambiguous | Open to interpretation for OCs |
A white lightsaber is specifically for characters who have LEFT the Jedi Order but remain on the light side. It's a statement of independence, not just a color choice.

Star Wars has hundreds of sentient species. Your choice affects size, lifespan, culture, and how the galaxy treats your character.
Popular OC species and what they bring:
The Star Wars universe isn't binary light/dark in practice, even though the movies present it that way. For OC creation, think of Force alignment as a spectrum:
Star Wars has a very specific visual language. Include era-appropriate details:
"A Togruta Jedi Knight from the Clone Wars era, wearing battle-worn Jedi robes with Republic armor plates on the shoulders, green lightsaber ignited, standing on the bridge of a Venator-class Star Destroyer — manga style, cinematic lighting"
Key details to always include: era, faction, species features, weapon state (ignited/holstered), and setting. Star Wars characters are inseparable from their environments.
Can my OC be a Mandalorian Jedi? Yes — Tarre Vizsla was the first Mandalorian Jedi in canon. But it's extremely rare and creates massive cultural tension. Your OC would be caught between two fundamentally opposed philosophies.
How many lightsaber forms should my OC know? Most Jedi specialize in one or two of the seven forms. Mastering more than three is exceptional even for Council members. Pick forms that match personality: Ataru (Form IV) for acrobatic fighters, Soresu (Form III) for defensive minds, Juyo (Form VII) for aggressive ones.
Can my OC survive Order 66? Yes, but surviving Jedi are hunted relentlessly by Inquisitors. Survival means hiding the Force, changing identity, and living in constant danger. It's a compelling setup but your character needs a specific reason they escaped.
Should my OC be Force-sensitive? Not necessarily. Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Din Djarin prove that non-Force characters carry entire stories. Pilots, smugglers, soldiers, and politicians are all viable and sometimes more interesting because they can't rely on the Force as a narrative crutch.
