An Era-by-Era Guide to Building Your Character

The Star Wars galaxy spans over 25,000 years of in-universe history, and the era you drop your OC into changes everything — available technology, political factions, the state of the Force, even what a lightsaber means. A Jedi during the Old Republic is a fundamentally different character than a Jedi hiding during the Empire.

This guide is organized chronologically. Find your era, then build outward.

Era I: The Old Republic (5000 BBY—1000 BBY)

The golden age for OC creation. Canon is sparse, creative freedom is vast, and the galaxy is at its most chaotic.

What defines this era:

  • Thousands of active Jedi AND thousands of active Sith — the Rule of Two hasn't been invented yet
  • Sith Empires openly control sectors of the galaxy
  • Lightsaber designs are chunkier, more archaic — crossguard sabers and curved hilts are common
  • Armor is heavier, technology is less sleek, everything has a "used future medieval" aesthetic

OC opportunities unique to this era:

  • Sith who aren't hiding — they have academies, hierarchies, and political power
  • Jedi who are warriors first, diplomats second (the Order is militant during this period)
  • Grey Force users who exist in the space between two massive factions
  • Non-Force-users navigating a galaxy where both Jedi and Sith wage open war

The Old Republic is the best era for Force-sensitive OCs who don't fit neatly into Jedi or Sith. The moral ambiguity is baked into the setting.

Era II: The Prequel Era / Clone Wars (32 BBY—19 BBY)

Thirteen years of galactic war. The Jedi are generals, the Republic is fracturing, and Palpatine is pulling every string.

What defines this era:

  • The Jedi Order at its peak population — roughly 10,000 Knights and Masters
  • Clone troopers with unit-specific markings and paint jobs
  • Separatist droid armies and independent systems
  • Mandalorian civil war in the background

OC archetypes that thrive here:

ArchetypeRoleDesign Notes
Jedi GeneralCommands a clone battalionRepublic armor elements mixed with Jedi robes; utility belt, comlink
Clone CommanderLeads troops with personalized gearPhase I or Phase II armor, custom paint, rank markings
Separatist AgentWorks for Dooku or independent systemsCorporate fashion, battle droid escorts, subtle villainy
Underworld OperatorProfits from war chaosSmuggler aesthetic, neutral territory, connections to both sides
PadawanYoung Jedi navigating wartimeSimpler robes, training saber or early lightsaber, braid

Era III: The Imperial Era (19 BBY—4 ABY)

The Empire has crushed the Republic. Jedi are hunted. The galaxy operates under authoritarian rule.

What defines this era:

  • The Force is almost extinct in public consciousness — most people think Jedi are myths
  • Imperial uniforms are sharp, color-coded by branch (grey for officers, black for intelligence, white for stormtroopers)
  • Rebellion operates in secret cells that don't know each other
  • Bounty hunters have a golden age — the Empire outsources dirty work

Design rules by faction:

Imperial: Clean lines, pressed uniforms, rank plaques, code cylinders. Officers wear boots and gloves at all times. ISB (intelligence) agents dress in black. TIE pilots have distinctive sealed helmets.

Rebel: Mismatched gear, repurposed equipment, orange flight suits for pilots, Earth-tone fatigues for ground troops. Nothing matches because nothing is standardized.

Independent: Bounty hunters, smugglers, and crime syndicate operators. This is Boba Fett territory — battered armor, hidden weapons, ships that look like junk but fly fast.

Era IV: The New Republic / First Order (5 ABY—35 ABY)

A fractured galaxy rebuilding from war while a new threat grows in the Unknown Regions.

What defines this era:

  • Luke Skywalker attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order (and fails)
  • The New Republic deliberately demilitarizes — which creates a power vacuum
  • The First Order builds in secret, combining Imperial discipline with fanatical ideology
  • Resistance is smaller, scrappier, and more desperate than the Rebellion ever was

Lightsaber Color: What It Actually Means

Lightsaber color isn't aesthetic — it's narrative.

ColorMeaningWho Carries It
BlueGuardian — combat-focused JediMost Jedi Knights, frontline fighters
GreenConsular — wisdom and Force masteryScholars, diplomats, negotiators
YellowSentinel — balance of combat and knowledgeJedi Temple Guards, investigators
PurpleRare — inner conflict between light and darkCharacters who walk a moral edge
RedSith — "bled" from a corrupted kyber crystalAll Sith and dark side users
WhitePurified — a bled crystal healed by a light-side userAhsoka Tano; characters who rejected both Jedi and Sith
OrangeExtremely rare — canon ambiguousOpen to interpretation for OCs

A white lightsaber is specifically for characters who have LEFT the Jedi Order but remain on the light side. It's a statement of independence, not just a color choice.

Species Selection

Star Wars has hundreds of sentient species. Your choice affects size, lifespan, culture, and how the galaxy treats your character.

Popular OC species and what they bring:

  • Twi'lek: Lekku (head-tails) are expressive and culturally significant; widespread across the galaxy
  • Togruta: Montrals sense surroundings spatially; pack hunters by instinct; Ahsoka's species
  • Zabrak: Cranial horns, tattooed faces, dual hearts; Dathomirian variants have ties to Nightsisters
  • Chiss: Blue skin, red eyes, cold intellect; from the Unknown Regions; Thrawn's species
  • Mirialan: Geometric facial tattoos marking life achievements; naturally attuned to the Force
  • Trandoshan: Reptilian, regenerate limbs, hunt Wookiees for sport; often bounty hunters
  • Mandalorian (culture, not species): Any species can be Mandalorian — it's an adoptive warrior culture

The Force Alignment Spectrum

The Star Wars universe isn't binary light/dark in practice, even though the movies present it that way. For OC creation, think of Force alignment as a spectrum:

  1. Devout Light — orthodox Jedi who follow the Code absolutely
  2. Pragmatic Light — serve the light but break rules when necessary (Qui-Gon, Ahsoka)
  3. Grey — use both sides without allegiance; believe the Force is a tool, not a religion
  4. Pragmatic Dark — use dark side techniques for personal goals but aren't consumed by it (Ventress post-redemption)
  5. Devout Dark — Sith or dark side acolytes committed to the philosophy of power through passion

Prompt Strategy for Star Wars OCs

Star Wars has a very specific visual language. Include era-appropriate details:

"A Togruta Jedi Knight from the Clone Wars era, wearing battle-worn Jedi robes with Republic armor plates on the shoulders, green lightsaber ignited, standing on the bridge of a Venator-class Star Destroyer — manga style, cinematic lighting"

Key details to always include: era, faction, species features, weapon state (ignited/holstered), and setting. Star Wars characters are inseparable from their environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my OC be a Mandalorian Jedi? Yes — Tarre Vizsla was the first Mandalorian Jedi in canon. But it's extremely rare and creates massive cultural tension. Your OC would be caught between two fundamentally opposed philosophies.

How many lightsaber forms should my OC know? Most Jedi specialize in one or two of the seven forms. Mastering more than three is exceptional even for Council members. Pick forms that match personality: Ataru (Form IV) for acrobatic fighters, Soresu (Form III) for defensive minds, Juyo (Form VII) for aggressive ones.

Can my OC survive Order 66? Yes, but surviving Jedi are hunted relentlessly by Inquisitors. Survival means hiding the Force, changing identity, and living in constant danger. It's a compelling setup but your character needs a specific reason they escaped.

Should my OC be Force-sensitive? Not necessarily. Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Din Djarin prove that non-Force characters carry entire stories. Pilots, smugglers, soldiers, and politicians are all viable and sometimes more interesting because they can't rely on the Force as a narrative crutch.
