This one piece oc maker treats character creation as a shipbuilding exercise. You don't start with the cannons — you start with the hull. Who is this person, what ocean did they grow up on, and what impossible dream are they chasing? Everything else — the devil fruit generator picks, the pirate oc maker crew role, the bounty — gets bolted on after that foundation is watertight.
This guide is structured as a decision tree. At each fork, make one choice and follow it down. By the end, you'll have a fully realized One Piece character ready to generate.
Your first fork determines the entire trajectory of your OC.
Pirate — Chasing a dream on the Grand Line. Design freedom is maximum. Wild outfits, bizarre powers, dramatic poses.
Marine — Enforcing justice (your definition of it). More structured aesthetic — uniforms, rank insignia, regimented weapons. But Marine OCs get moral complexity for free.
Revolutionary — Fighting the World Government from the shadows. Think guerrilla aesthetic: hoods, masks, practical combat gear.
Cipher Pol — Government agents. Suits, ties, concealed weapons. Rokushiki martial arts as a baseline.
Civilian specialist — Shipwright, doctor, cook, scholar. One Piece's world is so rich that non-combat OCs carry full stories. Think Franky before he fought.
Not every strong character in One Piece has a Devil Fruit. Shanks, Garp, Rayleigh, and Zoro are among the most powerful characters in the series, and none of them ate one. A Haki-specialist OC with no fruit is completely valid.
If you choose a Devil Fruit, you need to pick a type:
| Type | What It Does | Naming Rule | Design Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paramecia | Alters the user's body or environment in a specific way | [Concept]-[Concept] no Mi (e.g., Gomu Gomu = Rubber Rubber) | Body modification, unusual proportions, visual gimmick |
| Zoan | Transforms the user into an animal (3 forms: human, hybrid, full animal) | [Animal sound/name]-[repeat] no Mi (e.g., Ushi Ushi = Cow Cow, Model: Giraffe) | Animal features in hybrid form, muscular build, feral energy |
| Logia | Turns the user's body into a natural element, intangible | [Element sound]-[repeat] no Mi (e.g., Mera Mera = Flame Flame) | Elemental visual effects, fluid body language, environmental impact |
The "-mi" suffix rule: All Devil Fruit names in Japanese end with "no Mi" (の実, literally "fruit of"). The fruit name itself is usually an onomatopoeia or doubled word. When inventing one, double a Japanese sound word: Kaze Kaze (wind), Tetsu Tetsu (iron), Kage Kage (shadow — already taken, by Moria).
Zoan subcategories to consider:

Every Straw Hat has a job. Your OC should too, whether they're on a crew or sailing solo.
Bounty isn't a power level — it's a threat assessment. The World Government assigns bounties based on how dangerous someone is to the system, not how strong they are in a fight. Nico Robin got a 79 million bounty at age eight because she could read Poneglyphs.
Bounty tier reference:
| Bounty Range | What It Signals | Example Characters |
|---|---|---|
| Under 100M | East Blue threat / rookie pirate | Arlong (20M), early Luffy (30M-100M) |
| 100M—500M | Grand Line veteran, Supernova-class | Most Supernovas at Sabaody |
| 500M—1B | Yonko Commander level or major government threat | Katakuri (1.057B), King (1.39B) |
| 1B—3B | Yonko-adjacent, world-shaking influence | Luffy (3B), Law (3B), Kid (3B) |
| 3B+ | Emperor-tier or Pirate King candidate | Shanks (4.048B), Blackbeard (3.996B) |
For a new OC, start under 300M unless you're writing a veteran character with decades of backstory. Nothing deflates an OC faster than a 5 billion Berry bounty on someone who just left their home island.
Three types, each with its own design implications:
Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku) — Sensing presence and intent. Advanced users see seconds into the future. Design note: give these characters alert, perceptive poses — eyes slightly unfocused, head tilted as if listening.
Armament Haki (Busoshoku) — Invisible armor that hardens the body, turns limbs black at advanced levels. Design note: the black hardening is one of the most recognizable visual markers in One Piece. Include it in your prompt.
Conqueror's Haki (Haoshoku) — Overwhelming willpower that knocks out the weak-willed. Only one in several million people has it. This is not something to hand out casually — it marks your OC as someone with the spirit of a king.

Eiichiro Oda's character designs follow specific principles that make OCs feel like they belong in his world:
Silhouette first. Every major One Piece character is recognizable as a solid black silhouette. Luffy's hat and slim build. Whitebeard's massive frame and crescent mustache. Brook's skeletal thinness. When designing your OC, ask: could someone identify them from their outline alone?
Exaggerate one feature. Oda picks one physical trait and pushes it past reality. Long legs, huge hands, a gigantic head, impossibly broad shoulders. Your OC needs that one exaggerated anchor.
Clothing tells the backstory. Oda doesn't do generic outfits. Every piece of clothing references a culture, a profession, or a personality trait. A marine captain's justice coat. A Wano samurai's kimono. A Fishman's lack of footwear.
"A [role] on a pirate crew, [body type with one exaggeration], wearing [culturally specific outfit], [Devil Fruit visual effect or weapon], standing on a [ship deck / island / Marine base], One Piece art style, bold lines, dynamic pose"
Example: "A pirate captain with impossibly long arms wrapped in bandages, wearing an open crimson captain's coat over bare chest, a jagged grin, smoke curling from a cigar, standing on the figurehead of a ship with one foot on a barrel, wanted poster pinned to the mast behind him"
Can my OC have a Devil Fruit that already exists in canon? Only if the canon user is confirmed dead. Devil Fruits reincarnate into the nearest compatible fruit when their user dies, so two living people can't have the same fruit.
Should my OC know all three types of Haki? Very few characters master all three. Having one well-developed type is more interesting than three half-baked ones.
How do I design a good crew for my OC? Each crew member should visually contrast the others. Oda designs crews as sets — tall and short, loud and quiet, human and non-human. If your captain is small and loud, their first mate should be huge and silent.
What sea should my OC come from? The four Blues (East, West, North, South) each have different vibes. East Blue is the "weakest" but most storied. North Blue is associated with assassins and dark histories. The Grand Line itself is for characters who've already proven themselves.
